Let them grow out some. Meantime rub vasaline aka petroleum jelly over them. Every time you wash your hands, reapply and run your fingers over them as you would do in a massage. Do not use nail polish or anything on your nails until your nails are back to normal. I would also mention this to the M.D. as there may be other issues that may be causing the flaking of your nails. My doctor always checks my nails because I'm asthmatic and just by the color he can see If I'm getting enough oxygen. There are other reasons why doctors check nails which I don't really know of. I had mine taken off a while ago too. Some recommended me to do some warm milk soaks and I picked up this Sally Hanson treatment made for when you get acrylics taken off. It's this 2 phase thing, you do the first for a couple of weeks and then the second for a couple more. It was really helping til I got lazy and stopped doing it. It only takes a couple of minutes, you ';paint'; the stuff on give it a minute and then rub this oil in that's supposed to help them grow. It's nice also because it makes your nails look better so you're not trying to cover them up with anything. You'll also want to keep them short, like VERY short, otherwise they're just going to break and rip off anyway.
I'm having the same exact problem. I'll bet you anything it's because we're not getting enough protein in our diet. Eat more meats, dairy, and peanut butter! :)

I have really bendy fingernails, and sometimes they split in half or layers. What does this mean?
You need more calcium, or your nail polish remover is making your nails brittle. You can use lotion on your nails or try nail polish with nylon fibers. That makes them harder and more durable. Never chip off your nail polish and use nail polish remover infrequently. One study has shown that biotin (a vitamin) 2.5 mg a day helps nails.They also make some nail polish that helps make nails strong.

So I'm 20 and I've been doing it for as long as I can remember.
It's really a nervous habit if I'm stressed or worried about something, or really even just bored.
I don't even realize I'm doing it, but I hate it.

If nothing else works, and you feel desperate you could always consider hypnotism (if you have the money).

I bit my nails for 15 years...and I stopped the day I got fake nails put on (for my birthday) and after a few weeks I took them off and noticed that my real nails started growing, so I filed them to look decent and then I kept them painted. If you paint your nails, you may not want to bit them as much because they look pretty and you don't want to chip the polish. Currently, I painted my nails black, cause I know that if I took even a nibble, the paint will chip and its very noticeable and ugly.
Theres a product in the chemist which you can buy that will help you stop biting your nails.. my friend tried it and she stopped biting...

I cut my fingernails to short and now I am in pain, help?
I cut my left index fingernail too short yesterday morning and now its in extreme pain; I cannot put more than just the slightest amount of pressure on it before I experience an extreme stabbing sharp sensation of pain. How do you remove fake fingernails?
soak your nails in warm water for 10 mins then they pop right off (btw the warmer the water the easier they are to get off)How do you remove fake fingernails?

I would recommend letting us professionals do the dirty work. But if you want to do it yourself purchase some acetone at Sallys and use two old glass bowls. It's called to double boiler method.
1. Fill the first bowl (preferable a little larger one) with very hot water.
2. Put enough acetone in the second bowl so that all of your fingernails will be submerged in the acetone. You will feel the acetone heating up. This means it is starting to break down the acrylic.
3. Put the smaller bowl into the hot water bowl. Wait for a few minutes until the acetone heats up. Using a cuticle pusher, orange wood stick start scraping the acetone off layer by layer. You can also use a nail file (gently)
Just remember that as soon as you take your hand out of the acetone it will start to harden within a few moments. It should take approximately 1/2 hour to completely remove all the acetone. Discard the acetone. Do not throw it down the drain. Best bet is to put the bowl outside or somewhere well ventilated and put some paper towels submerged in the acetone. It will evaporate into the air.
Wash your hands, buff or apply a nail hardener.

were these ones you bought at a drugstore and put on yourself? if they are, it usually says on the box but im sure if you soak your fingernails in hot water or alcohol they will come off. hot water will melt the glue.
DO NOT PULL THEM OFF. well, i guess you could, but when you pull them off it also takes part of your nail with it, like the top 3 layers or something.
if you got yours put on by a salon, you should go back to the salon to get them removed, plus you get your hands pampered and massaged and it feels real nice. i would know, i got mine off yesterday.
oh yeah and i dont know if they are gel or bio gel or acrylic so it really depends.

I am a nursing student and I must keep my nails beautiful at all times so I keep them as short as I possibly can. Dirt usually comes out when you wash your hands and take showers. My advice to you is to cut them very short.
Scratch your nails on a bar of clean soap. Just rinse when you feel it is dirty. Be gentle as not to break your nails.

I cut my 4-year-old's fingernails and toenails with clippers when I realize that they are getting too long. I only cut them after his bath because he always has gross dirt and stuff under them otherwise. I let him watch America's Funniest Home Videos as a special treat when I cut his nails. When he was a baby I cut his nails with scissors while he was nursing. My 14 month old daughter will not let me cut her nails no matter what. I can not distract her with anything enough to let me do it. They few times I tried, she was so squirmmy that I ended up cutting her and I felt terrible. Both of my index fingernails start curving down as soon as they reach the end of my finger. Any explanations?
It has always been just the index fingers most of my adult life...have noticed in past 6 mos or so that my middle fingers are starting to do the same, and the curvature of the index fingers is getting worse. Am I just getting old, (am 45) or is this the sign of something else? 3 Doctors have not been able to give me any clues. But one suggested I see a cardiologist. ?? It comes from times when we had more Victorian standards about how girls and boys should behave. The men went to work, in the factory or out on the farm. Long fingernails just got in the way, and if they weren't cut off would eventually rip off on their own. By contrast, women were encouraged to stay inside, doing jobs like cooking and cleaning where they were more likely to be able to grow long nails. The richest women had servants to do all this for them, and were able to grow long nails because they didn't do anything at all. either cut your nails short, or it will eventually wash out. there is nothing really you can do, but wait. dont pick at it, thats why it hurts. if it gets infected, see a doctor, cause maybe its not sand. goodluck =)

Soak your fingers in acetone until nails are soft and then gently peal off. This may hurt a little and take a while for the gel to soften.
